Zoom Blurred Background Tutorial

Learn how to blur a background on Zoom meetings to achieve that nice blurred out background commonly found on DSLR cameras. This effect is done using the Virtual Background option, your webcam and a content creation tool called Kapwing.
First, you will need to snap a photo for the background. You can take a picture using your webcam or smartphone. If you’re on Windows, you can use the Camera Application or if you’re on a Mac you can use the Photo Booth Application. Step out of frame and remove your office chair. Then snap a photo of the empty background.

Next, edit this photo inside the content creation tool Kapwing. Click here to create a free Kapwing account.
Once inside Kapwing, click on New Project, then click on Start with Studio, then click on Start with Blank Canvas. Click Upload on the top left corner, then click inside the Click to Upload box to locate your photo.

Once that is loaded, click on Crop. Make sure that you are on the widescreen 16:9 setting then click Done Cropping.

Now click on Adjust and move up the Blur effect to achieve your desired amount of blur. Then click Done Adjusting.

Sometimes you will see a fading effect on the edges of your background, if this happens simply resize your photo by grabbing the handles and repositioning. Now, you have a blurred background. Click on the top righthand corner where it says Publish and Kapwing will process your edit and output a file you can download.
Now jump into a Zoom meeting and add the background. Click on the arrow next to Video at the bottom of the screen and select Choose Virtual Background. In this window, click on the plus icon to upload your new background. Once uploaded you will instantly see the new background in the preview monitor.

This effect can be used with or without a green screen; however, you will see better results with a green screen. If you are in need of a green screen, we recommend this option from Amazon or a green screen from WebAround.
